FAQ

ABOUT FOOT 2 AFRIKA

Q: What is the philosophy of Foot 2 Afrika?

A: Foot 2 Afrika was set up by two Tanzanian men, Emmason and Johnson. It was inspired as a result of their experiences while working for other agencies. They found, that within these organizations, volunteers were often disappointed by the high rates that they were charged to volunteer. Hence, Foot 2 Afrika was born. We disagree with the profit orientated nature of many companies within Tanzania who charge high rates to volunteer at local projects. Instead we take independentvolunteers from all over the world to work at the projects we are connected with, which include 7 orphanages,3 nursery schools, a secondary school and 4 women groups. Additionally we run a project at an orphanage in the town and are involved in setting up a clinic for victims of sexual violence at a local hospital. Volunteers either work directly at the projects we run or are placed in contact with worthwhile projects in the town. We feel that the work that volunteers carry out must be both rewarding and beneficial to the volunteer and local community.

MOSHI

Q: What do I need to know about money, ATMs and credit cards in Moshi?

A: The national currency is the Tanzanian Schilling - TSH for short. Exchange Bureaus are plentiful and there is one at the airport. Arriving with TSH is not neccesary especially if you have some US dollars, which is by far the most useful foreigncurrency. Euros and pounds may be accepted at some places but generally at not as good of an exchange rate. The exchange rate for traveler cheques tends to be very poor in comparison to the exchange rate of cash. There are many banks in Moshi which all have ATM\’s. All cash machines take VISA cards, and there are at least two which take Mastercard. The acceptance of credit cards as payment in gift shops is becoming more common. Other types of shops and restaurants do not accept credit cards. There is a Western Union branch in Moshi which comes in handy in emergencies.

Q: What do I need to know about telephones and internet?

A: Cell phones are extremely numerous in Tanzania with many people having more than one. Most European cell phones will work in the countryand buying a domestic line is very inexpensive. Cellphones from the US will not work in Tanzania. Cellphones may be purchased for around $30 upwards and operate by pre-paid vouchers which are available everywhere. Signal coverage is very good. Payphones are scarce and undependable. The country code for Tanzania is +255. When dialing from inside Tanzania drop the +255 and dial 0 before the number instead. Internet cafes are numerous in Moshi and inexpensive but at times the speeds can be frustrating. Some cafes offer Skype or other international calls through the internet. Wireless internet signals in Tanzania are virtually non existant.

Q: What is the climate like in Moshi?

A: In January the highs around 35 Celsius can be expected without the temperature dropping too much at night. In July, the coldest month, temperatures can range anywhere from nighttime lows around 7 Celsius with high temperatures around 16 Celsius. If you are involved in a Maasai immersion project or are going on safari, be aware that it can become colder yet at night in those areas. There are two wet seasons, the long rains from mid March until late May and the short rains in November. In between it can be very dry and dusty.
