MOUNT OF GOD (alt 2886 meters) Ol Doinyo Lengai means "Mountain of God" in Massai language. It is a steep around 2900m high stratovolcano located in a section of the East-African Rift Valley in northern Tanzania, near the Ngorongongo and Serengeti National parks. The volcano is known for its unique type of natrocarbonatite lava and as such it is the only known active natrocarbonatite volcano on earth. Ol Doinyo Lengai volcano, altitude 2886m (9524 feet), is a unique and extremely fascinating volcano that towers above the East African Rift Valley in Northern Tanzania, just south of Lake Natron. It is the only volcano in the world that sometimes erupts natrocarbonatite lava, a highly fluid lava that contains almost no silicon. |
